D.W. Field Park Walk Audit Report with Wildlands Trust’s Green Team – Brockton, MA

A walk audit was conducted in Brockton on August 16th in collaboration with the Wildlands Trust Green Team, a youth service-learning program that employs 15 teens from the Brockton area to work on projects at D.W. Field Park. WalkMassachusetts facilitators worked with the Green Team to conduct a walk audit of D.W. Field Park, gathering insights and identifying challenges that impact walkability and pedestrian safety. The audit began on Oak Street in Brockton and continued into the park on shared-use roadways and short pedestrian trails. This report aims to provide recommendations and insights to municipal decision-makers and stakeholders connected to D.W. Field Park to make necessary built environment changes that will improve mobility for all park users, particularly pedestrians.

Each month, we post about the fatal crashes in Massachusetts from the previous month, and share any trends that we see. For the full list of monthly posts, head here. We will be releasing a year in review for 2022 in the coming weeks to highlight common issues. You can read the year in review for 2021 here.

Last month, we took a look at crashes listed in the MassDOT Crash Portal in January; four were identified as people walking. In this post, we’ll look at crashes in MA in February 2023. The information in the chart below is compiled from news reports, and was checked against the MassDOT Crash Portal Dashboard “Fatal Crash Information.” Any Google Street View images included below use the address listed in the crash portal.

  • Of the 31 fatal crashes in Massachusetts in February in the MassDOT Crash portal, 8 were identified as people walking.
  • The average age of pedestrians hit & killed in February was 61.125.
  • Two of the crashes were hit & runs.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that 68-year old Paul Gerard Ouellette was struck by the driver of a Hyundai Elantra while Paul was crossing Pittsfield Road at nighttime in heavy traffic trying to get to the Knights Inn, where he had been staying. He died four days later at Albany Medical Center.

Western Mass News reports that a 78-year old man was struck and killed on Chicopee Street in Chicopee; this was the third fatal crash on Chicopee Street within the past three months, both in November 2022.

Susan Santoro, a resident who has lived on Chicopee Street for over three years said it’s an extremely dangerous road.

“First we had Bill who was a pedestrian, and he was hit and killed,” said Santoro. “Then we had Gary, and he was run over by a hit and run driver.”

“I have to get my grandson, that gets home from school every day,” explained Santoro. “They don’t stop for me. I absolutely take my life into my hands.”

“How many pedestrians are going to be killed before we can get something done here on Chicopee Street?” asked Santoro. “It just doesn’t make any sense to me.”

NBC Boston reports that a 31-year old man was struck and killed early Sunday on Dilla Street near the rear entrance to a Wendy’s parking lot.

The Boston Globe reports 28-year old Justin P. Kelley was struck and killed in a hit and run crash as he was walking in the breakdown lane; the driver fled the scene. Troopers located potential debris evidence that may have come from the driver’s vehicle that struck him.

WJAR/Turn to 10 reports that 84-year old Michael Ginsberg was struck and killed after leaving his favorite restaurant.

Ever Amaya [the owner of La Familia Restaurant] showed NBC 10 surveillance footage of the moments leading up to the collision. The video shows a man attempting to cross the street on Foundry with oncoming traffic moving in both directions. There is no crosswalk or sidewalks connecting La Familia to the other side of the road.

“He was crossing the street because he lives like a block from here,” said Amaya. “He used to come a million times so it’s sad that last night was the last.”

…”Accidents like that can happen because there’s no sidewalks on the street either and it’s kind of dark,” said Amaya.

NBC Boston reports 70 year-old Leland Thompson was struck and killed after being hit by at least one SUV while trying to cross the street.

Brockton police said he was hit about 6 p.m. on North Quincy Street. A Buick Enclave hit Thompson, according to prosecutors, and its driver stopped and tried to stop traffic.

That’s when the other SUV, a white Jeep Wrangler, appeared to hit Thompson around his legs, according to prosecutors. They didn’t share more information about the vehicle or specify what kind of contact it made with Thompson, including whether it’s believed to have contributed to his death. The driver is also being sought.

NBC Boston reports that 26-year Felix Romero was struck and seriously hurt at 4:59am in a hit and run crash on Thursday morning. He was standing outside his car after being involved in a minor crash with another vehicle on Route 3 when he was struck. Felix was rushed to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

State police said the driver of the white box truck left the scene of the crash and may have crossed into New Hampshire. 

NBC Boston spoke with his family:

His family is asking the driver to please come forward, saying, “We need you to come forward, we want justice for our son, we want justice for our kid.”

Boston 25 News reports that 65-year old Kevin Bradley, a professional who was onsite supporting recent construction at the Apple store, was struck and killed by 53-year old Bradley Rein, the driver who crashed his SUV through the Apple Store’s glass facade at Derby Street Shops at 10:45am Monday morning. 19 other people were injured. Officials said it was not clear how fast the vehicle was traveling. 

Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz announced charges of reckless homicide by a motor vehicle and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

More from Boston 25 News:

Dr. Jason Tracy, Chief of Emergency Medicine at South Shore Hospital, said 17 people in total arrived at the ER suffering from “all types of traumatic injuries,” including head trauma, lower extremity injuries, and “mangled” limbs.

Tracy added that some of the victims were immediately taken in for surgery and that others will eventually need to be operated on. A number of those patients sustained life-threatening injuries, according to Dr. Chris Burns, the hospital’s trauma chief.

However, this crash did not happen on MassDOT’s section of the roadway, it happened in the Derby Street Shops parking lot and into the Apple Store building, which is private property. There are trees and bushes, a large patio, and sidewalk between the parking lot and the building. The speed limit for the parking lot is unclear.

The Enterprise News reports that 50-year old Carlos Brito was struck and killed in a hit and run crash by the driver of a Nissan Murano SUV vehicle around 10pm on Monday evening. The driver left the scene and is still at large.

WCVB reports a 57-year old Michael Shaw was struck and killed by the 35-year old driver of a vehicle around 10:45am on Monday morning at the T-intersection of Cocasset Street and Oak Street. 

A Boston.com article references Facebook comments about the intersection:

On Facebook, several locals commented to urge police to have the town put in a traffic light at the intersection of Cocasset and Oak Streets.

There is a sidewalk on one side along both Cocasset and Oak Streets, with a crosswalk at the intersection connecting the sidewalks. A flashing yellow/red light at the T intersection can be seen on Google Street View, with a stop sign at the Oak Street approach to the intersection. The speed limit is unclear, with 40mph and 35mph both listed in the database.

Western Mass News reports that 68-year old William Matteson was struck and killed by the driver of a vehicle on Chicopee Street in Chicopee after 5pm on Monday evening. 42-year-old Benjamin Goraj of Chicopee was arrested on charges including motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence and operating under the influence (third offense).

Reporters spoke to Phylisity Sherokow, who lives nearby:

“This street, everybody’s speeding all the time,” Sherokow said. ” I think the police are trying their best to enforce the speed laws, but it’s Chicopee Street. People are flying down it at all hours of the day and night, and I walk to the stores myself sometimes. My husband, my family, we walk to the stores, just to get some fresh air, get a little walk, and it’s really sad.”

MassLive reports 62-year old Gary Turcotte was struck and killed in a hit and run by the driver of a vehicle around 5pm on Wednesday evening. The driver left the scene. This crash is less than a mile from a fatal crash that happened two days earlier on Chicopee Street at a similar time of evening.

Chicopee Street resident Susan Santoro started a handwritten petition — signed by over 400 people — asking for better traffic safety, including the installation of speed tables. From Western Mass News:

Santoro knew both victims well and she lives on Chicopee Street herself. She said over the past few years she’s lived there, she’s had serious concerns about drivers. “They will not stop for you. Even though the pedestrians have the right of way, you don’t have a right-of-way on this street,” Santoro noted.

MassLive reports that a South Hadley man driving a sedan struck and killed Edward Hanlon, Jr., age 81, and Ilona Murray, age 60, as they were crossing Northampton Street in front of a Burger King.

NBC 10 Boston reports that an 88-year old man was struck and seriously injured by a car near the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Seaver Street. Images from the news report and the location on the crash portal map seem to show the crash just beyond the intersection on Columbus Avenue. (Seaver Street becomes Columbus Avenue after it crosses Walnut Avenue.) We could not find any additional news coverage of this incident; the person passed away from the crash. According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this road is under local jurisdiction. The Google Street View is from July 2019 and does not reflect current conditions; a center running bus lane was added more recently, which can be seen on Google’s overhead view (Screenshot below). There is one general travel lane in each direction, a two way center running bus lane with pedestrian islands on each side for the Walnut Avenue bus stop, and sidewalks on both sides of the street. The speed limit is unclear, with fields showing 25mph and 30mph in the database.

MassLive reports that 27-year old Jamal Mustapha was struck and killed in a hit and run on I-290 by an unknown vehicle, possibly a tractor trailer; he was subsequently struck by other vehicles. None of the vehicles stopped.

The Boston Globe reports that the driver of a Ford F-150 struck and killed 45-year old Joy Swartzendruber, who was standing outside of her Toyota Avalon on the shoulder of the northbound side of the two-lane highway around 2:30 a.m. The driver sideswiped the Toyota and hit Swartzendruber.

WCVB reports that the driver of a 2014 Nissan Maxima struck and killed 45-year old Carlos Vasquez in the leftmost southbound lane near the Essex Street exit of Route 1. State police investigators believe Vasquez was attempting to cross from the area of a Burger King restaurant to the northbound side, where his girlfriend was waiting for him.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports that a 62-year old woman was struck and killed as she walked in the breakdown lane of Route 20 in Sturbridge. (News reports indicate this crash was in Sturbridge, while the details in the crash portal from the police report lists Brimfield; the Brimfield / Sturbridge line is near the crash location.) A preliminary investigation revealed the motor vehicle was traveling eastbound when the driver went into the breakdown lane and struck the person walking.

WCVB reports that a young married couple was crossing the street when they were hit. Eddison Matza, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Mira Fernanda, 20, is at Boston Medical Center in serious condition.

Witnesses told WCVB the couple was walking across the street after being dropped off when they were hit by a Mercedes sedan, that then was struck by the motorcycles. One of the motorcycles was then hit by another car in the chain reaction crash. 

“Since February it’s like the third accident I’m seeing on the same road,” witness Edmar Gonsalves said. “After I heard everything, I went outside and then what I found was a dead person right in front of my house. I can’t even trust the road. I can’t even trust my neighborhood because of the street over there — people driving crazy.”

Each month, we post about the fatal crashes in Massachusetts from the previous month, and share any trends that we see. For the full list of monthly posts, head here. Earlier this year, we released a year in review for 2021 to highlight common issues.

Last month, we took a look at three fatal crashes listed in the MassDOT Crash Portal in April. In this post, we’ll look at crashes in MA in May 2022. The information in the chart below is compiled from news reports, and was checked against the MassDOT Crash Portal Dashboard “Fatal Crash Information.” The Google Street View images included below use the address listed in the crash portal.

  • Of the 38 fatal crashes in Massachusetts in May in the MassDOT Crash portal, ten were identified as people walking.
  • The average age of pedestrians hit & killed in May was 57.
  • At least four of the crash locations either have the speed limit field left blank, or there are conflicting speed limits listed in the MassDOT Road Inventory Tool.

A 78-year old was struck and killed by the driver of a Toyota Corolla on Bridge Street near the intersection with VFW Highway in Lowell. The Lowell Sun coverage included MassDOT data for this location:

Data released by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation shows Bridge Street and VFW Highway experienced more vehicle crashes than any other intersection in the state from 2015 to 2017. The MassDOT’s 2017 Top Crash Locations Report — which includes pedestrian accidents — is based on crashes entered into the Registry of Motor Vehicles Crash Data System. The report shows over the two-year period there were 124 total crashes at the intersection, including 28 crashes that were fatal or caused injury.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this road is under local jurisdiction. At the intersection with VFW Highway, there is a slip lane and travel lane in one direction, and three lanes in the other direction (two turning lanes and a straight/right turn lane). There is a sidewalk on each side of the street. The speed limit is 35mph.

A 19-year old Palmer man was struck by the driver of a tractor-trailer on the Mass Pike walking near the median. MassLive reported that investigators believe the man was a Palmer resident who had walked up onto the highway after parking his car on North Main Street under an overpass.

NBC10Boston spoke to the driver behind the woman who struck and killed the person walking:

He was driving down West Chestnut in Brockton when he saw the Prius in front of him suddenly veer off the road and crash into a telephone pole, then a woman laying on the ground.

7News spoke to a neighbor:

I’m just disturbed…Did it have to happen? I don’t think so, and is it going to happen again? Am I gonna be talking to you guys in a month, two months? I hope not.

Last July, a pedestrian was struck and killed less than a mile away on Providence Highway/Rt1 at Elm Street.

NBC10Boston reported that a pedestrian was critically injured after a driver struck them on Sunday night at the intersection of Blossom and Cambridge Streets. The Beacon Hill Times reported that the person struck was a West End resident who succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital. The driver fled the scene.

The City of Boston is currently holding outdoor in-person “pop-up” sessions this summer to view project materials, share comments, and ask questions about the redesign of Cambridge Street. They hope to share a near-term concept design soon. Learn more on the project website.
