Hot and humid in Hyannis? Perfect time for a Walk Audit

After experiencing drenching rain during a walk audit in June in Yarmouth, the skies were clear for yesterday’s trip to Cape Cod for a walk audit in Barnstable – but the heat and humidity were out in full force! Thanks to representatives from the Barnstable Dept. of Public Works, Dept. of Planning, the Cape Cod Mall/Simon Malls, and the Cape Cod Commission for braving the conditions and contributing their time on this EOPSS-funded walk along Rt 132 yesterday to look at opportunities for improving connections along and across this corridor.

Streets for People resident group meets with City Staff in Lowell

WalkBoston conducted its third Streets for People training session in Lowell with the Coalition for a Better Acre and Acre neighborhood residents on Thursday, July 31. City Transportation staff joined us and presented three street-redesign projects near our study area in the Acre neighborhood that will make walking safer. The designs include enhanced crosswalks, dedicated green buffers for sidewalks, and pedestrian signals. It was great to hear about the City’s commitment to walkability and interest in resident concerns regarding safer streets. The group then visited the two most dangerous intersections based on WalkBoston’s pedestrian crash data analysis, and measured vehicle speed and pedestrian signal timing. We already came up with recommendations that the City will consider. We look forward to continuing our conversations with the City as our training program continues. Streets for People is funded by the Cummings Foundation.

Salem Walk Audit – The Point

On June 6, 2018, WalkBoston conducted a walk assessment in the Point neighborhood of Salem, with support from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Mass in Motion program to promote active transportation and healthy eating. The goal of the walk assessment was to recommend improvements to the local built environment that improve walkability and pedestrian safety. Participants included representatives from WalkBoston, Salem Mass in Motion, Salem Mayor’s Office, Salem Traffic and Parking Department, Salem Commission on Disabilities/Age-Friendly Salem, Salem Family Health Center, North Shore YMCA, and North Shore Community Development Corporation.

Walk Audit Today in Charlestown

Gorgeous morning for a Charlestown walk audit with the Mystic River Watershed Association and friends. Big idea is to find new connections from the neighborhood to the waterfront and to highlight the parts of the Harbor Walk that already exist.

Walk audit today in Leominster (in the heat!)

Whether it’s pouring rain or searing heat, our walk audits don’t stop! Thanks to our colleague Andrea Freeman at the Massachusetts Public Health Association, as well as City Councilor Mark Bodanza, State Representative Natalie Higgins, and her legislative aide Taylor Landry, for joining us on an EOPSS-funded walk in downtown Leominster today to look at opportunities for safer pedestrian crossings and traffic calming.
