World Day of Remembrance is this Sunday, November 20th

World Day of Remembrance is an annual international event during which we gather as a community to reflect upon those we’ve lost and commit ourselves to improving our roads.

In 2022 so far, over 2,000 lives have been lost to, or seriously injured by, a traffic crash in Massachusetts — not including the countless friends, family, and loved ones impacted as well. On November 20th, we’ll recognize each person impacted during this year’s World Day of Remembrance for victims of traffic crashes. The MA Vision Zero Coalition is marking the occasion by laying down yellow flowers at the Massachusetts State House, one blossom for each person killed or seriously injured in a crash in 2022, and supporting events across the state to remember those lost in traffic deaths.

We invite you to join WalkBoston and the rest of the MA Vision Zero Coalition in recognizing World Day of Remembrance by taking individual action or joining/planning events in your community. Please see our World Day of Remembrance 2022 Toolkit to learn more about how you can recognize World Day of Remembrance. Here are the list of events happening across the state:

  • The MA Vision Zero Coalition will be laying down yellow flowers at the Massachusetts state house, one blossom for each person who was killed or seriously injured in a traffic crash in 2022. The display will be out from 10am through the rest of the day. The following buildings and structures will be lit up in yellow on the night of the 20th: Government Center MBTA Station, Boston City Hall, the Zakim Bridge, the Fore River Bridge, the Burns Bridge, and the Longfellow Bridge.
  • Walk Bike Springfield & the Holyoke BikePed Committee will host an event on November 20th at 2pm at the Springfield Library (220 State Street).
  • WalkMedford will be hosting a vigil on November 18th at 11am with Mayor Lungo-Koehn. Exact location in Medford Square TBD
  • WalkBike Worcester and District 5 City Councilor, Etel Haxhiaj, are hosting a Worcester World Day of Remembrance event on Sunday, November 20th in front of Chandler Magnet School, 525 Chandler Street, at 3:00 pm.
  • The City of Pittsfield will light-up facades at all downtown locations in yellow in honor of World Day of Remembrance.

Additionally, to address this public health crisis, the Coalition is urging our legislators to take action that could save lives. We have sent a letter to legislators demanding the passage of H.5103, An Act to reduce traffic fatalities — crucial legislation that could drastically improve traffic safety. This is a common-sense bill that would improve the safety standards for large trucks and protect vulnerable road users sharing the road with them. You can send a letter using our sample script below.

Each month, we post about the fatal crashes in Massachusetts from the previous month, and share any trends that we see. For the full list of monthly posts, head here. Earlier this year, we released a year in review for 2021 to highlight common issues.

Last month, we took a look at ten fatal crashes listed in the MassDOT Crash Portal in May. In this post, we’ll look at crashes in MA in June 2022. The information in the chart below is compiled from news reports, and was checked against the MassDOT Crash Portal Dashboard “Fatal Crash Information.” The Google Street View images included below use the address listed in the crash portal.

  • Of the 44 fatal crashes in Massachusetts in June in the MassDOT Crash portal, five were identified as people walking.
  • The average age of pedestrians hit & killed in June was 51.5. (One person’s age has not been released.)

Lynn’s Daily Item reported that 22 year old Brandon Jennings was struck and killed by Miguel Rodriguez, 36, who was driving on Storrow Drive near the ramp to the Tobin Bridge and Interstate 93 north. Rodriguez fled the scene. Another person driving on Storrow Drive at the time witnessed the crash and followed the driver to Lynn, reporting the location and license plate number to police.

Rodriguez has been charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of liquor, operating under the influence of liquor, leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in injury or death, and failure to stop or yield.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, sections of this part of the road are under local jurisdiction while others are under MassDOT jurisdiction. There are three or four travel lanes in each direction, a divided median, and sidewalks on both sides. The speed limit is listed at 30mph.

State Street was the deadliest street in Springfield for pedestrians in 2021. In early June 2022, WWLP reported that the City of Springfield initiated a pilot effort to slow drivers down on the section of State Street near the library:

Those temporary improvements will include narrowing the roadway from two lanes on each side of the road down to one with traffic cones and barricades in order to study the effect of the changes to pedestrian safety.

Last month, we took a look at the seven fatal crashes listed in the MassDOT Crash Portal in March. In this post, we’ll look at crashes in MA in April 2022. The information in the chart below is compiled from news reports, and was checked against the MassDOT Crash Portal Dashboard “Fatal Crash Information.” The Google Street View images included below use the address listed in the crash portal.

  • Of the 21 fatal crashes in Massachusetts in April in the MassDOT Crash portal, three were identified as people walking.
  • The average age of pedestrians hit & killed in April was 60.
  • One additional fatal crash was in the news: 5-year-old Candice Asare-Yeboah was struck on April 18th on Stafford Street in Worcester and passed away in the ICU on May 24th; a vigil at the crash site was held on Sunday, May 30th. Since Candice died more than 30 days from the date of the crash, this crash may not be included in the federal FARS dataset.

Update, 6/1: After this monthly post was added, a reader sent us a link to an additional fatal crash that was not listed in the portal. On April 27th, a 78-year-old woman was hit and killed at Elm Street and Whittier Street in Andover. We reached out to MassDOT who followed up with Andover PD about this crash; the fatal crash report has now been submitted to MassDOT and added to the crash database.

Richard Mullins, age 33, was struck and killed by 36-year-old Abana Cabrera on Kneeland Street in Boston. UniversalHub reported:

Abana Cabrera, 36, of Randolph, was arraigned yesterday in Boston Municipal Court, before Mullins’s death, on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury, OUI alcohol as a second offense, and failure to stop or yield, the DA’s office says, adding she had been earlier convicted of DUI in Nevada in 2016…The defendant allegedly made statements to Boston Police detectives that she had been drinking since 4 p.m. the prior afternoon.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, Kneeland Street & Hudson Streets are under local jurisdiction. There are two lanes and a bike lane in each direction on Kneeland. There is no crosswalk across Kneeland Street at Hudson. The intersection of Kneeland and Hudson is one block from the intersection of Kneeland and Albany Street, which has access to I-93 and I-90. The speed limit is 30mph.

Roselaine Jacquet, age 75, was struck and killed on I-291 East just before Exit 3. Western Mass News reported that a 34-year-old Springfield man was driving eastbound when he struck her in the center travel lane.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this road is under MassDOT jurisdiction. It is a limited access highway, with a median and 3 travel lanes in each direction. The speed limit is 55mph.

This section of I-291 is also signed as Rt 20.

The Salem News reported that a 72-year old Salem male was treated on scene then rushed to Salem Hospital with serious head injuries after he was struck by the driver of a vehicle on North Street (Rt 114) in Salem.

WalkBoston has conducted a number of walk audits in Salem over the last few years. This intersection is located outside the planned route of the September 2019 North Salem Walk Audit, but other intersections along North Street were examined at that time.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this road is under local jurisdiction. At this intersection with Lynde Street, there are two lanes in each direction to accommodate turning lanes, with a bike lane on one side and a bike lane that transitions to sharrows on the other side. The speed limit is 30mph.

  • The name of the person driving was not identified in any of the crashes in news articles that we found.

WWLP reports that a 39-year old man was struck and killed after a 42-year-old man from Ludlow was traveling on I-291 westbound in a 2009 Toyota Matrix struck him in the left travel lane/center median. The male pedestrian was then struck by a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic driven by a 29-year-old man from Springfield in the left travel lane.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this road is under MassDOT jurisdiction. It is a limited access highway, with a median and 3 travel lanes in each direction. The speed limit is 55mph.

16-year old Springfield Central High School student Alexangeliz Medina died after the driver of a school bus struck and killed her near the MassMutual Center at Dwight & State Street in Springfield.

Western Mass News spoke to Alexangeliz’s parents, Sorangel Ayala and Alex Medina:

“She was the life of the party always making everyone laugh,” said mother Sorangel Ayala.

“That’s why it makes it even harder because she did the right thing, why did it happen, why? She didn’t try to run a light nothing, she crossed the street when she was suppose to,” said Ayala.

Her parents detailed Alexangeliz’s love for art and what it meant to her. “This was just her hobby and her way of expressing herself and being who she is,” said Ayala.

Now, as they learn to navigate life without Alexangeliz, her family has ways they remember her bright energy.

“She wanted to be a teacher, she wanted to change, she wanted to cause change and that we don’t have to hate each other because of our differences, we need to celebrate each other becasue we have differences,” said Medina.

Dwight Street is one-way, with 3 travel lanes. There is a sidewalk on both sides of each street. The speed limit is listed as 35mph in the Road Inventory.

This was the fourth fatal pedestrian crash on State Street in Springfield in 2021, and followed two fatal pedestrian crashes in November (see last month’s post).

Ann O’Flaherty, a nurse at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, was struck and killed by a driver at Washington and Cambridge Street in Boston’s Brighton neighborhood while on her way to work at the hospital.

Irish Central shared that Ann was originally from Ireland and had been a nurse at St. Elizabeth’s since 1988. Boston 25 News spoke to people that lived nearby:

Locals say this stretch of Washington Street is very fast.

“It can be because you have cars coming from both ways and coming off the section right there they are coming from three different ways,” said Everett Mills who lives nearby.

Jim Long also a resident of the area said “A lot of times cars just go through here real quick and don’t slow down. Particularly when they come down the hill.”

63-year old Marguerite Scanlon was hit and killed by a driver on Bridge St (Route 109) in Dedham near the Doggett Circle senior and elderly housing community. Boston 25 News talked to people near the scene:

“I was almost hit the other day going out. They don’t care how they drive. This is a senior citizen place. They don’t care if they’re going 100 mph,” said Janet, who didn’t want to use her last name.

Neighbors are recalling their own close calls with vehicles on Route 109, also known as Bridge Street.

Police have not said if speed was a factor in Monday night’s deadly accident.

“They drive quickly. I think this is a dangerous area because there’s a curve in the road, and you can’t see the cars coming,” said neighbor Jo-Ann Burnett.

In this post, we’ll look at crashes in MA in November 2021. The information in the chart below is compiled from news reports, and was checked against the MassDOT Crash Portal Dashboard “Fatal Information by Year.” The Google Street View images included below use the address listed in the crash portal.

  • Of the 36 fatal crashes in Massachusetts in November in the MassDOT Crash portal, eight were identified as people walking. We have also included one additional fatal pedestrian crash that was covered in the Cape Cod Times which may not have been submitted yet to MassDOT (as of 12/16).
  • The crash portal does not include names. The name of three of the people walking who died have not been made public yet.
  • The average age of pedestrians hit & killed in November was 68.3.
  • At least two of the crashes were hit & runs (as referenced in news articles).
  • The name of the person driving was only identified in two of the crashes in news articles that we found.

40-year-old Michael Diaz Vargas was struck and killed on State Street in Springfield. WWLP reported that the 26-year-old driver, Eric Reyes of Springfield, faces charges of motor vehicle homicide by negligence and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this street is under local jurisdiction. It is two-way, with 2 travel lanes in each direction, separated by a grassy median. There is a sidewalk on each side. There is no crosswalk across State Street. The speed limit is listed as 35mph.

Brookline Patch reported that 63-year-old Patricia “Patty” Arellano was in a crosswalk when she was struck and killed by the driver of a vehicle. The unidentified driver was cited for failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. She had been traveling on Washington Street and turned right onto Downing Road where she struck Patty.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, both streets are under local jurisdiction. Washington Street is two-way, with 1 travel lane in each direction. There is a sidewalk on each side. There is a crosswalk across Downing Road where Patty was struck. The speed limit is 30mph.

In January 2020, WalkBoston met with Boston City Councilor Liz Breadon and representatives of Boston’s Office of Neighborhood Services and Age Strong Commission at the B’nai B’rith Housing’s Covenant House & Patricia White Apartments (a 3 minute walk on Washington Street from the location in Brookline where Patty was killed). Residents shared that drivers speed along Washington Street mainly during non-rush hour times of day as they come down the hill on Washington away from Commonwealth Avenue, which leads to dangerous conditions for pedestrians trying to use the crosswalks. The City of Boston has since implemented changes to those crosswalks as part of the Allston Brighton Mobility Plan.

MassLive reported that 57-year-old Christopher Sheppard was hit and killed in a multiple vehicle crash on I-495. From the MassLive story:

Lauren Dyer, 62, of Braintree, who was driving a pickup truck, was pronounced dead at the scene after being crushed between two vehicles. Another driver, Christopher Sheppard, who was hit while on foot outside his vehicle, died Tuesday night in a Rhode Island Hospital, authorities say. He was transported to the hospital after the incident with severe injuries.

The Boston Globe reported an unidentified 73-year-old woman was fatally struck and killed by a driver in Brockton on Main Street. The article included a statement from the Plymouth District Attorney’s office: “Brockton Police contacted Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and an investigation commenced. The investigation is ongoing at this time.”

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this street is under local jurisdiction. (Main Street is Route 28, and some sections of Route 28 in Brockton are under MassDOT control.) Main Street is two-way, with 1 travel lane in each direction. There is a sidewalk on each side. There is a crosswalk without curb ramps across Main Street at this address. The speed limit is 35mph.

StreetsblogMASS reported a driver struck and killed Gayle Ball, a Springfield City library employee, age 56, while she was crossing State Street. It was the third death caused by a motor vehicle driver on State Street so far this year and second pedestrian that was hit/killed in November.

MassLive reported that the city is now making a change to State Street:

In a press briefing in city hall, public works director Christopher Cignoli said the redesign is thought of as the best way to address the safety concerns on State Street caused by the conflicting issues of pedestrians not using a crosswalk and vehicles driving fast or recklessly.

As part of the redesign, the city intends to install a crosswalk, elevated 4 to 8 inches above the roadway, between the Central Library and St. Michael’s Cathedral.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this street is under local jurisdiction. It is two-way, with 2 travel lanes in each direction, separated by a grassy median. There is a sidewalk on each side. There is no crosswalk across State Street. The speed limit is listed as 35mph in the Road Inventory. (It is posted as 25mph in one direction and 30mph in the other direction on Google Streetview, which dates to September 2019).

This crash was not listed in the crash portal as of 12/16; this info is from Cape Cod Times reporting.

The Cape Cod Times reported 91-year-old Dorothy Henderson was struck by two vehicles several minutes after she exited a Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority bus at the junction of Orchard Road and Asher’s Path on Route 28 in Mashpee on Nov. 22, according to Mashpee police. Although Henderson was initially conscious after the accident, she died from her injuries on the way to the hospital. The two drivers were not identified.

Her friend, Frances Delgado, described the intersection near the crash location:

With no crosswalk, or pedestrian stop signal at the Route 28 intersection, Delgado said cars must have had a hard time spotting [Dorothy]. “The green light is so short. You can barely make a turn there, let alone somebody walking across there. It’s so dark. You can’t see anybody out there,” Delgado said. “After this is all said and done, we need a crosswalk or safety precautions put in place. We are a 55 and older living community and it’s not right that our lives are at risk in this way.”

NBC Boston reported that an unidentified 76-year-old Lynn resident was struck and killed in a crosswalk on the Lynnway by the driver of a 2007 Jeep Commander, a 32-year-old Lynn resident.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this street is under MassDCR jurisdiction. It is two-way, divided parkway, with 2 travel lanes and parking in one direction and 3 travel lanes in the other direction. There is a sidewalk on each side. There is a crosswalk and signal at Newhall Street. The speed limit is 35mph.

85-year-old Alexander Gribko was struck and killed on a side access road along Winslow Gray Road in Yarmouth. The driver fled the scene. Alexander was found by a police officer on routine patrol in the morning, though police believe he may have been struck a little after 5pm the day before while returning home from an afternoon walk. Police are still trying to identify the driver and the vehicle that struck Gribko, according to a Cape Cod Times article from mid-December.

WCVB spoke to Alexander’s neighbors:

“He’s friendly. He’d talk with all the people up and down the street, because he was out walking,” said resident Phil Johnston.

Residents are in shock that anyone could hit Gribko and leave him to die in the dark and the cold.

“It’s absurd. I just don’t get it. How could anybody do that?” asked resident Tom Vuono.

WWLP reported 74-year-old Joseph Labroad of Palmer died after being struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by 33-year-old Nicole Mantanes of Palmer. The driver left the scene but was located soon after. She faces seven counts including: OUI Liquor 2nd offense, negligent operation of a MV, marked lanes violation, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury/ death, motor vehicle homicide, speeding, and inspection sticker violation.

According to the MassDOT Road Inventory, this street is under local jurisdiction. This stretch of North Main Street is two-way, with 1 travel lane in each direction. There is a sidewalk on each side of the road up to Wright Street, and on one side after it. There are no crosswalks at the intersection. The speed limit is 30mph.
